Briefing a nanny when two children have different daily routines

Two children can create competing demands even when they live in the same home. Describe their separate routines and overlap points so the proposed nanny arrangement can be assessed realistically.

Map each child's day separately

Write down the ordinary periods of activity, school or nursery attendance and household transitions for each child. Avoid combining everything into a single generic children schedule. The candidate needs to understand which responsibilities happen simultaneously. Share relevant preferences and parent instructions without adding unnecessary personal information or expecting the nanny to infer differences from ages alone.

Identify the difficult overlaps

Look for moments when one child needs an adult in one place while the other has a separate commitment. Decide how the household will provide support where one person cannot reasonably meet both expectations. Do not assume a nanny title makes every combination workable. Raise these specific periods during the hiring discussion instead of discovering them only after joining.

Agree priorities and adult support

Explain who is available to help and how that person is contacted. Set clear boundaries around transport, household chores and other tasks that might compete with the agreed childcare duties. A parent should resolve conflicts in the brief rather than leaving the worker to improvise an unsupported arrangement. Any specialist needs should be assessed through appropriate qualified support separately.

Review the routine as children schedules change

School terms, new activities and household work patterns can alter the original balance. Revisit the schedule when one child's routine changes, because it may affect both. Discuss material changes to responsibilities and hours explicitly. Keep a dated version of the plan so parents, other carers and the nanny understand the same current arrangement.

A practical example to adapt

Illustrative example: For example, one child needs a school collection while another remains home during that period. The parents arrange the collection separately and describe the nanny home duties clearly. They do not assume the worker can cover both locations simply because each task appears short on its own.
