Questions to ask before hiring a home cook

Describe the meals first
Explain the number of people, daily meals, cuisine preferences, allergies and dietary restrictions. Ask about dishes the cook prepares regularly and whether they can follow a household menu. Do not assume a private chef and a daily home cook offer the same service.
Walk through a normal kitchen day
Ask how the cook plans ingredients, checks freshness, stores leftovers and keeps raw and cooked food separate. Clarify who shops and whether cleaning the cooking area is part of the role. Extra housework should be discussed separately.
Arrange a paid cooking trial
Choose a representative meal and agree the payment, timing and ingredients in advance. Assess taste, hygiene, portion planning and communication. Tell the candidate about allergies before any food is prepared.
Confirm the practical details
Agree salary, hours, rest days and whether guests or events change the workload. Ask for references with permission. Set a start date only after both sides understand the duties.
