Explain kitchen access rules before your cook starts

A cook needs reliable access to the working kitchen, but that does not imply access to every cupboard or private area of the home. Explain practical boundaries before the first shift. Clear access instructions help the worker begin on time and avoid awkward guesses about locked storage, family rooms or shared household spaces.

Map the necessary route

Show the agreed entrance, kitchen route and any building sign-in process. Tell the cook who will provide access at the scheduled start time. If the household is sometimes absent, arrange a suitable authorised process instead of leaving the worker to negotiate with neighbours or guards. Keep personal security decisions with the employer and relevant building management.

Identify permitted storage

Point out the ingredients, utensils and cleaning supplies the cook may use. Explain which cupboards are reserved and who can open them when an item is needed. A locked essential ingredient should not become a performance problem for the worker. Make ordinary supplies accessible through the agreed arrangement before expecting meals to be completed independently.

Define communication around private areas

If serving food requires entering another room, state whether the cook should knock, wait or hand items to a household member. Do not assume family members share the same preference. Keep the instructions consistent and respectful. Where room service is outside the role, provide a clear collection point so meals do not depend on uncertain access.

Plan changes to the routine

Tell the cook when visitors, maintenance or household travel will change access. Name a backup contact if the usual person is unavailable. If an access delay prevents the normal start, discuss its effect on meal timing. The worker should not be expected to recover a household-caused delay without adjusting the agreed workload or service expectation.

A practical example to adapt

Hypothetical example: the cook arrives before the household returns from school drop-off. The employer arranges the approved entry process and leaves ordinary ingredients in the accessible pantry. Guest crockery remains locked and outside the daily role. The cook can begin breakfast preparation without waiting for a family member to answer repeated cupboard questions.
