Define a cook’s duties when a home has two kitchens

A home with a main kitchen and a smaller service kitchen can create unclear expectations about where preparation and cleanup belong. Explain how each space is used before assigning work. The number of kitchens alone does not define the role; the important details are the meals, movement, equipment and closing tasks involved.

Assign each space a purpose

State which kitchen is used for ordinary preparation, finishing, drinks or guest service. Identify any equipment that is reserved or unavailable. Avoid requiring the cook to move unpredictably between both spaces because family members use different preferences. A clear purpose for each area makes it easier to organise ingredients and keep the preparation sequence consistent.

Plan ingredient and utensil movement

Decide where everyday supplies are stored and who transfers items between kitchens. Duplicate only what the household genuinely needs, rather than expecting the worker to search both areas for every utensil. If the spaces are on different floors, include the carrying and return trips in the workload. Discuss assistance where movement competes with meal preparation.

Clarify cleanup across both areas

Define which surfaces, dishes and equipment the cook cleans in each kitchen. If family members use the service kitchen independently, decide who restores it afterwards. The cook should not automatically inherit every new mess simply because the area contains a sink or hob. Agree the handover condition so everyone understands what the scheduled work includes.

Review guest-day exceptions

Hosting may change which kitchen is active and create additional serving work. Confirm those changes before the occasion. Give the cook one contact to resolve conflicting instructions from people using separate spaces. If the event requires both kitchens working simultaneously, discuss appropriate support instead of assuming one worker can supervise two separate preparation areas at once.

A practical example to adapt

Hypothetical example: the main kitchen handles cooking while the smaller kitchen is used for drinks and guest service. The cook prepares meals in one place, and a helper manages the service area. When the family hosts dinner, the same division remains clear. The cook is not interrupted repeatedly to locate items moved between two uncoordinated cupboards.
