Create a household food-preferences register your cook can use

A food-preferences register should simplify decisions, not produce an impossible collection of separate menus. Record the preferences that genuinely affect daily cooking and identify how disagreements are resolved. Keep ordinary taste preferences separate from restrictions that require clear specialist or household instructions, so the cook is not asked to interpret their importance.

Collect preferences through one contact

Ask family members to send their ordinary likes, dislikes and serving preferences to a designated person. That person should remove contradictions and agree practical priorities before sharing the register with the cook. A worker cannot reasonably decide whose instruction matters most when relatives independently request incompatible versions of the same dish for one meal.

Distinguish firm rules from flexible choices

Mark whether an item is a firm household instruction or simply a preference when convenient. Explain approved alternatives for flexible requests. Do not let a serious restriction appear as an optional note among favourite dishes. The household remains responsible for obtaining and communicating any specialist guidance rather than expecting the cook to assess the consequences independently.

Keep the record short

Use a small number of actionable entries and refer to household recipes for detailed methods. Too much information can make essential instructions difficult to find. Review whether each note changes a real cooking decision. Remove obsolete entries when tastes or routines change, and tell the cook which version replaces the previous one.

Revisit workload created by preferences

If the register requires several complete meals at every sitting, discuss whether the menu or staffing arrangement needs revision. Preferences do not create unlimited preparation capacity. Consider shared base dishes and separately agreed serving choices where suitable. Ask the cook to explain the practical workload before promising every family member a different daily menu.

A practical example to adapt

Hypothetical example: three relatives send different seasoning requests for dinner. The household menu contact agrees one shared version and records a separate serving preference where practical. The cook receives a single instruction. When preferences change later, the contact updates the register rather than asking the worker to remember which family message is now current.
