Prepare a meal-planning brief before hiring a home cook
A useful cook brief describes ordinary meals, timing and kitchen responsibilities. Give candidates a realistic picture of your week before discussing special menus or occasional guests.

Write three typical days
Choose days that represent your normal household: perhaps a working day, a school day and a quieter weekend. List who eats at home and which meals must be freshly prepared. Include packed lunches and separate meal times. This provides a clearer workload than saying that the family needs three meals without explaining what those meals involve.
Clarify food preferences and instructions
Explain the dishes eaten most often, preferred spice levels and ingredients the household avoids. Share relevant dietary instructions clearly; a cook should not be expected to diagnose or design medical treatment. If someone has an allergy, discuss the required precautions and whether the candidate has the experience to follow your instructions reliably.
Divide kitchen responsibilities
Decide who buys ingredients, approves substitutions, washes utensils and handles serving. Specify storage and cleaning expectations. If another helper shares the kitchen, explain the handover between them. These duties can occupy substantial time and should not appear only after a salary has been agreed for cooking alone.
Use the brief during assessment
Ask the candidate to explain how they would organise one of the sample days. Discuss preparation order, quantities and how they would communicate a missing ingredient. If you arrange a practical assessment, agree the meal, supplies, duration and payment. Adjust the menu after joining through a planned conversation rather than changing the whole role each day.
A practical example to adapt
Example menu brief: breakfast for four before school, two packed lunches and dinner for the household at a fixed time. Another helper washes dishes, while the cook prepares an ingredient list for approval. Weekend guests are discussed in advance. The family wants everyday meals rather than event catering. Sharing this outline lets the candidate explain the preparation sequence and helps Staffly assess whether the proposed hours fit the request.
