Introduce household equipment to a new helper
Experience in another home does not mean a new helper knows your appliances, switches or storage equipment. Treat equipment orientation as part of onboarding. The employer should demonstrate approved use, provide accessible instructions and explain when the helper must stop and ask for assistance.

Select equipment that belongs to the role
List only the devices the helper will actually use. Identify any equipment reserved for household members or specialists. Explain where instructions are kept and who answers questions. Do not include unfamiliar electrical or mechanical repairs under general household help. A demonstration of ordinary controls is different from permission to investigate a fault.
Demonstrate one task at a time
Show the complete normal routine, including preparation, switching off and putting accessories away. Then ask the helper to explain or demonstrate the steps back at a comfortable pace. This is a chance to correct unclear instructions, not a test designed to embarrass them. Keep written notes in a format they can use.
Define the stop-and-report rule
Discuss unusual noise, damaged parts, missing accessories or an unexpected warning. The helper should stop the relevant task and contact the employer according to the instructions provided. Make clear that reporting uncertainty is welcome. A worker should not feel pressured to keep using a device simply to avoid delaying the household routine.
Review after actual use
Ask which steps were confusing once the equipment has been used during normal work. Labels or a clearer storage arrangement may solve the problem. Update the orientation when equipment changes. If a device is central to the hiring brief, discuss the expected training rather than claiming every experienced candidate will already know that exact model.
A practical example to adapt
Hypothetical example: an employer introduces a vacuum with unfamiliar attachments. The helper practices the ordinary setup and learns where each part belongs. A loose connection is reported rather than improvised around. The employer checks the instructions and decides what happens next before the equipment is used again.
