Hiring a gardener for routine home garden care

A gardener brief should describe the planted areas, watering routine and equipment available. Separate regular upkeep from landscaping projects, tree work and other specialist tasks.

Describe the garden you have

List lawns, beds, pots and any kitchen garden areas, noting where care is most frequent. Explain the household's priorities, such as keeping paths clear or maintaining particular plants. Photographs can help a candidate understand the space, but share private property details only through the hiring conversation rather than posting them publicly.

Agree the regular work

Discuss watering, weeding, basic pruning, lawn upkeep and clearing garden waste as applicable. Ask which tasks the candidate has performed before and which need further instruction. Avoid promising results for plants without assessing their condition. Major landscaping, high tree work or structural repairs should be considered separately from routine garden maintenance.

Set equipment and product rules

Identify who provides tools, where they are stored and who authorises purchases. Explain any equipment the gardener is expected to use and arrange suitable instruction. Products must be used according to their labels and appropriate precautions. The worker should have a clear route for reporting damaged tools or uncertain plant problems rather than improvising.

Choose attendance around the workload

A compact planted terrace and a large lawn may need different schedules. Discuss travel, access, working hours and how seasonal changes will be reviewed. If the gardener also performs household errands, state those separately. Review completed work against the agreed areas and routine, and discuss substantial additions before changing the role.

A practical example to adapt

Example brief: maintain a small lawn, planted beds and terrace pots, with tools and water supplied by the household. The gardener reports plant problems and asks before buying products or changing established planting. Major tree work and landscaping are outside the routine placement. Attendance is agreed around the actual upkeep required. A review after the first few visits can clarify frequencies without promising a particular plant outcome or assuming unlimited seasonal work.
