Hiring a cook for a large or joint family
For a large family, the number of meals and separate routines matters as much as headcount. Explain portions, timings and kitchen support so a cook can assess the real workload.

Count meal sittings as well as people
A family eating together creates a different schedule from relatives needing breakfast, lunch and dinner at several times. Note how many portions are served at each sitting and whether food can be reheated. Include regular guests and packed meals. Do not expect the candidate to infer the routine from the size of the home.
Choose one menu contact
Different family members may have conflicting preferences. Nominate one person to approve the main menu and communicate changes. Agree how individual requests are handled without disrupting the whole schedule. This does not remove personal preferences; it gives the cook a clear way to resolve competing instructions.
Check the kitchen's capacity
Describe the stove, preparation space, storage and utensils available for larger quantities. Identify who handles groceries, washing and serving. A cook may need help with those tasks when food preparation already fills the working day. Discuss the division of labour explicitly rather than assuming that a single placement covers every kitchen function.
Assess representative quantities
During an interview, ask about experience preparing meals at a similar scale. If a trial is appropriate, agree a representative but limited task with payment and ingredients settled beforehand. Review portion accuracy, sequencing and communication as well as taste. After joining, keep notes on quantities and leftovers so adjustments are based on the household's actual consumption.
A practical example to adapt
Example planning question: eight people eat together at dinner, but breakfast is served in three sittings. Ask whether breakfast items can be prepared together, which dishes must be fresh and who clears between sittings. The answer may change the daily workload more than adding one dinner guest. Keep a short record of ordinary quantities during the first week, then agree adjustments with the cook and the designated family menu contact.
