It happens on both sides more than either side likes to admit. A worker stops showing up with no explanation, or an employer goes quiet after promising to confirm. Neither is acceptable, and both have practical, if imperfect, responses.
If a worker stops showing up
- Try to reach them directly first, a genuine emergency is more common than people assume
- Check the guarantor's contact details if you took them at hiring, this is exactly what they're for
- If it was a listing from this site, you can report it so the listing is reviewed
- Resist withholding any final pay owed as a punishment, it's rarely legal and tends to escalate rather than resolve anything
If an employer goes silent
- Follow up once, directly and politely, plans do fall through on both sides
- Don't travel for a second interview or trial with an employer who was vague or evasive about basic details the first time
- If money was promised and not paid for work already done, keep any written record, messages, agreed rate, dates worked
Why this happens so often in this line of work specifically
Most placements in domestic staffing still happen informally, no written agreement, no verified contact details, nothing to actually hold either side to. Preventing it next time
- Get a written agreement in place before anyone starts, covering notice period on both sides
- Keep a guarantor's contact details on file, and let the worker know you have them
- Pay on the agreed date, every time, late or inconsistent pay is one of the most common reasons workers leave without notice
- Be realistic and honest about the role and hours at hiring, a mismatch discovered on day three is a common cause of early no-shows
None of this guarantees a placement lasts, but it meaningfully shifts the odds, and gives both sides something concrete to point to if it doesn't work out.
