Driving is one of the more accessible domestic and corporate roles to enter, but it is also the one where employers do the most checking, because the risk if it goes wrong is real: their vehicle, their family, their safety in traffic. Understanding what employers actually test for is the fastest way to become a candidate they trust.
The licence class you need
LTV (Light Transport Vehicle)
Covers cars, jeeps and light vans. This is what almost every household and office driving role requires. If you will be driving a family car or a small office vehicle, LTV is the licence that matters.
HTV (Heavy Transport Vehicle)
Covers buses and trucks. Not needed for most household roles, but holding it alongside LTV signals more driving experience overall and can command a premium even for light-vehicle work.
Keep your licence current, not just held
An expired licence offers an employer no legal protection at all, and checking the expiry date is one of the first things a serious employer or agency does. Renew it before it lapses, not after.
What employers actually test
- A real driving test in their own vehicle, not yours, since handling differs between cars
- Reversing and parking specifically, since more vehicle damage comes from parking than from driving
- How you handle unfamiliar directions and mild pressure, not just quiet streets
- Whether you use mirrors and indicate as habit, not only when being watched
Building a track record
References from previous employers matter more in driving than in almost any other role, because a clean record over time is the best evidence you can offer that you drive safely when nobody is checking. Ask a previous employer, even a short-term one, if they are willing to be a reference before you need one, and keep their contact details current.
- Keep a simple record of where you have worked and for how long, even informally
- If you are new to the role, be honest about it rather than overstating experience you do not have, since a driving test exposes the gap immediately
- A clean traffic-challan history is worth mentioning proactively; it is one of the first things checked
Different driving roles, different demands
- Family driver. Irregular hours, school runs, errands, a lot of waiting. Patience matters more than speed.
- Office driver. Fixed routes and timings, often with document or bank errands. The most predictable version of the role.
- Night duty. Should carry a pay premium; be clear upfront if you are being hired for day work only, since being asked to also cover nights without agreement is a common source of disputes.
