Security guard roles carry more mandatory verification than almost any other domestic or household position, because the job is specifically about trust with access and safety. Understanding what is actually required, rather than what is commonly skipped, is what separates a guard households and businesses take seriously from one they treat as an afterthought.
What is genuinely required
- A police character certificate, which most legitimate employers treat as mandatory rather than optional for this specific role
- Original CNIC and a permanent address that can be verified, not just a current rented room
- For armed postings, a valid weapons licence, checked against the actual record rather than taken on the guard's word
Ex-services or prior security experience is a real advantage
Backgrounds in the armed forces, police or an established security firm are consistently preferred by employers and generally command higher pay, since they come with an existing, checkable track record rather than an unverified claim.
Armed versus unarmed postings
These are genuinely different jobs with different requirements and different pay. An armed posting requires a valid weapons licence and typically additional employer-side liability considerations, which is part of why it usually pays more. Do not claim armed experience or a licence you do not actually hold, this is one of the areas most likely to be checked thoroughly rather than taken on trust.
What the job actually involves day to day
- Gate duty and visitor screening, including keeping an accurate visitor and vehicle register
- Night patrolling where the posting requires it, which is a different demand from day gate duty and should be discussed explicitly
- Basic emergency and fire response awareness
- Parcel and delivery handling at the gate, increasingly common with online shopping
How pay tends to progress
Entry-level unarmed day postings sit at the lower end of the market. Pay rises with verified experience, a clean record over multiple postings, night-shift or armed responsibilities, and ex-services or professional security-firm background. Building a record of references from actual previous postings, even short ones, is the most direct way to move up the pay range over time.
A note on documentation
Keep your own copies of your police character certificate, CNIC and any licence, and never hand over originals permanently to an employer or agency.
