Cooking is unusual among domestic roles because it cannot really be judged from a conversation. A confident phone manner tells an employer nothing about whether the food is actually good, which means the trial is where this job is won or lost, not the interview.
What actually gets a cook hired
- Consistency on the everyday dishes a household eats most, not just one impressive special-occasion dish
- Hygiene habits visible during the trial itself, hand washing, raw meat handling, surface cleaning, not just the finished plate
- Honesty about what you can and cannot cook well, rather than claiming continental or Chinese experience you do not have
- Working cleanly with whatever kitchen and equipment the household actually has
Ask for a paid trial, and take it seriously
A short paid trial, cooking one or two meals in the household's own kitchen, is the single most useful thing you can offer a nervous employer. It proves far more than a reference call, and a fair employer should pay for it.
The skill range, and where the pay actually sits
Daily desi cooking, roti, salan, rice dishes, is the most common demand and the most accessible entry point. Continental and Chinese cooking is genuinely a different skill and, where you actually have it, worth naming specifically rather than folding into a general claim of experience. Event and dawat cooking for twenty or more guests is a different discipline again, timing and quantity change everything, and claiming it without having actually done it shows immediately on the day.
Moving up from daily cooking to higher-paying work
- Build a specific, honest list of dishes you cook well rather than a vague claim of range
- Ask departing employers for a written or verbal reference before you leave, not months later when they may not remember details
- If you want to move into event or dawat cooking, look for a chance to help on someone else's event first rather than claiming the experience cold
- Special diets, diabetic, low-salt, child-friendly, are a genuine and growing area of demand worth being able to speak to specifically
Hygiene and food safety, taken seriously
This is not a formality households check casually, it is often the deciding factor in a trial. Wash hands visibly before handling food, keep raw meat separate from other ingredients, clean surfaces between tasks, and store leftovers properly. These habits, done consistently rather than only when watched, are what separates a cook a household trusts long-term from one they worry about.
